Piloting a TBM-Avenger, after destroying a Japanese ammunition dump, broke formation and repeatedly strafed enemy positions to relieve besieged American infantry. Crashed into the sea during carrier takeoff on combat sortie the following day. Ensign George H.W. Bush also piloted a TBM-Avenger as part of the same Task Force 58.
